FG Suspends Import Duties, Taxes on Essential Food Items Ahead of #EndBadGovernance Protest

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi, has suspended import duties and taxes on essential food items.

This, he noted, is the federal government’s effort to afford the populace essential commodities and reduce hunger.

In an address to the public Monday evening, Adeniyi answered questions bordering on the biting economic hardship the people contend with and, on behalf of the government, tried to state the government’s posture in mitigating the pains of the jolting economy on the people.

He stated that the federal government, through the NCS, was doing it to facilitate further the biting effect of the global inflation that had seriously ravaged most countries, of which Nigeria is part.

Apart from the economic moves, the NCS is also reactivating its anti-proliferation efforts of arms and other dangerous weapons across Nigeria’s land, sea, and airports.

Citing the need for collaborative efforts and tranquil development in the country, Adeniyi said the destruction of the supply chain erodes foreign investment, distorts trade, fuels instability, agitates desolation, and destroys revenue collection.

“Let us be united with resilience and cooperation in these difficult times, extending our heartfelt gratitude to those that have embraced the path of peace and dialogue,” Adeniyi said.

This suspension of import taxes comes amidst the government’s effort to address the upcoming protests, as  Nigerians are getting set to demonstrate in the #EndBadGovernance protest to express their feelings and displeasure about the continued economic hardship grounded in a variety of policies of the Tinubu-led administration.
