The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has begun providing humanitarian aid to victims of the 2022 floods in Benin.
The project, launched on July 15 in Cotonou and worth 392,357,051 CFA Francs (N1.04 trillion), is in response to the severe floods that affected 40 communes in Benin from August to September 2022.
ECOWAS Resident Representative in Benin, Ambassador Amadou Diongue, said that this aid aligns with the 2050 vision of ECOWAS.
The Beninese Red Cross is managing the project. It has three main goals: providing humanitarian aid to 2,500 households affected by the 2022 floods, strengthening the resilience and recovery of vulnerable citizens, and enhancing the capacities of citizens, communities, and the ECOWAS member state.
Benin’s Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Alassane Séidou, thanked the ECOWAS Commission for its constant support. He said their support signifies the strong cooperation between Benin and the ECOWAS.
Séidou said that during the floods in 2022, the government responded quickly through the National Disaster Response Fund, allocating 290 million CFA Francs (N773.97 million) to aid the affected areas. He noted that ECOWAS’s support came after Benin’s appeal to various national and international actors during the 2022 National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and Adaptation to Climate Change session.
Minister Séidou urged the Beninese Red Cross to ensure fair and efficient aid distribution, adhering to principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence.
