The Department of State Security Services (DSS) has initiated legal action against two released protesters from the #EndBadGovernance movement, citing allegations of defamation.

In a letter dated November 25, 2024, and addressed to one of the accused, Engr. Khalid Aminu, the law firm Mamman Nasir & Co., acting on behalf of DSS officials Yusuf Muhammad and Jibrin Nasir, demanded a public retraction of statements made by the protesters.

The letter claimed that during an interview with Channels Television and a subsequent publication in the Nations Newspaper, the protesters accused DSS officials of engaging in acts of torture and inhumane conduct during their detention in Kaduna.

The solicitors argue that these statements are “untrue misrepresentations of facts” and a “deliberate attempt to tarnish the image” of the DSS and its officials.

According to the solicitors, the allegations have caused significant embarrassment and professional damage to the two DSS officials  locally and internationally.

The letter stated that their clients have endured “negative traumatic challenges” as a result of the claims. The law firm issued a seven-day ultimatum for Khalid Aminu to issue a public retraction of the statements in question and ensure the retraction is published in three widely read newspapers.
