Domestic Flight Ticket Prices Surge to N123,700 in August, Bus Fares Show Mixed Trends — NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a significant increase in the cost of domestic flight tickets across Nigeria, with the average fare reaching N123,700.14 in August 2024.

This marks a 25.51 per cent rise from July’s average of N98,539.34, according to the NBS’s latest Transport Fare Watch report.

The report also highlighted a sharp 56.56 per cent increase in airfares year-on-year, compared to N79,011.38 in August 2023.

Among the states, Niger recorded the highest average airfares at N129,575.21, followed closely by Abuja at N129,442.67. Conversely, Zamfara had the lowest fares at N102,665.89, with Cross River following at N120,088.93.

Regionally, the south-east saw the highest average airfare at N125,640.19, while the north-west reported the lowest at N121,957.18.

On Bus Transportation, NBS also provided updates that commuters travelling within cities experienced a 7.77 per cent decrease in fares, with the average cost dropping to N869.35 in August, down from N942.61 in July. On a year-on-year basis, city bus fares declined by 34.95 per cent from N1,336.38 in August 2023.

However, intercity bus fares showed a slight uptick, rising by 0.59 per cent to N7,159.00 in August, compared to N7,117.17 in July 2024. Year-on-year, intercity fares rose by 20.97 per cent from N5,918.18 in August 2023.

Anambra and Gombe states recorded the highest intercity bus fares at N9,580.85 and N8,349.26, respectively. Kwara had the lowest average intercity fare at N5,574.46, followed by Ebonyi at N5,614.81.

For bus journeys within cities, Zamfara recorded the highest fare at N1,155.52, followed by Ondo with N1,065.20. Adamawa had the least expensive city bus fare at N455.33, with Abia coming in second at N455.35.
