Disney is working on a live-action adaptation of its hit animated film Tangled, with The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey in discussions to lead the project. The new version will be based on the 2010 musical reimagining the classic Rapunzel fairy tale.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for her work on “Thor: Love and Thunder” and Netflix’s “Do Revenge”, is penning the script for the movie, which follows Rapunzel’s adventure as she escapes her secluded tower with the help of a charming outlaw, Flynn Rider.
Initially released in 2010, Tangled earned widespread praise and grossed $592 million worldwide. The film’s success also led to follow-ups like the short Tangled Ever After and the TV series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.
Gracey, who gained fame for directing The Greatest Showman, is expected to bring his experience with musicals to this adaptation. The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman, became a surprise hit, raking in over $450 million globally despite a slow start.
This live-action project adds to Disney’s growing list of animated classics being reimagined, including The Lion King, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid. Upcoming titles include Snow White in 2025 and Moana in 2026.
