Despite recurring national grid collapses in the past two years, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has claimed that Nigeria’s power generation has increased by 2,000 megawatts under the current administration.

Adelabu made this assertion while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), led by its president, Margret Oguntala, in Abuja. According to the minister, Nigeria’s power generation, which reportedly remained stagnant at around 4,000MW in 2022, reached 6,003MW.

In 1984, the country generated 2000MW of electricity and this was not increased to 4000MW until about 40 years later, around 2022 or so. We are about two years now, but we have been able to increase it to 6000 megawatts and this can be attributed to the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the realisation of the importance of the sector as a major factor to galvanise the economy, Adelabu stated.

The minister’s claim comes amid persistent nationwide power outages, frequent grid collapses, and complaints from citizens and businesses about unreliable electricity supply. Since the beginning of Tinubu’s administration in May 2023, Nigeria has suffered multiple grid failures, plunging large parts of the country into darkness.

While acknowledging that Nigeria is still far from its desired power supply level, Adelabu insisted that the administration’s commitment to revitalising the power sector is yielding results.

He challenged the NSE to be more active in addressing the sector’s challenges, particularly in infrastructure efficiency and manpower development.

“NSE was established 67 years ago, yet we still experience grid collapses. What are our engineers doing? Should it be like this? The answer is no,” he said, emphasising the need for more training and technical contributions from Nigerian engineers.
