Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reportedly increased public school boarding fees to ₦100,000 despite the ongoing economic instability in Nigeria.

According to PeoplesGazette, this was disclosed in a circular released by the state government through the basic and secondary education ministry, directing all boarding school proprietors to implement the new fee as students prepare for the 2024/2025 academic session.

As undersigned by Olufemi Asaolu, the director of basic education services in the ministry, the circular highlighted a 65 per cent increase, as the initial fee was ₦35,000 per session.

I have the directive of the Honorable Commissioner to inform all public boarding house schools in Lagos State that the state government has approved the review of the boarding fee payable in all public boarding house schools in Lagos state,” the circular reads partly.

“The newly approved fee is only One Hundred Thousand Naira (₦100,000). I am further directed to inform you that no additional fees of any form should be collected by the schools,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, according to the circular, the 2024/2025 session will commence on September 15, 2024.

This new fee adds to parents’ struggle to raise funds for their children despite ongoing difficulties caused by the policies of the former Lagos State governor, now President, Bola Tinubu.
