Fully armed operatives of the Nigerian Police Force on Friday forcefully dispersed a group of protesters, deterring them from gathering at Berger Junction, Wuse, Abuja.

According to reports, the security officers fired tear gas canisters at the protesters and even journalists covering the procession.

Vanguard reported that the protesters were chanting ‘Hunger dey oo, hunger dey ooo” (There’s hunger, there’s hunger) before they were dispersed.

Videos posted on X showed that some passers-by and motorists were caught off-guard.

The situation follows an injunction granted by an Abuja high court seeking to confine protesters to the MKO Abiola National Stadium.

Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike had on Thursday night called on protesters to obey the court order, disclosing that security agencies had intelligence that miscreants planned to hijack the protest to destroy properties on Friday (today).

The security agencies will not allow that. Every protester, please go to the MKO Abiola stadium and do your protest. That is what the court said, he declared.

According to Vanguard, leaders of the protesters said they were not served with a copy of the said order.

Protesters have, however, reconvened at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja after being dispersed at Berger roundabout.
