Nigerian music superstar Davido is opening up about love, loss, music and life in the spotlight. In a recent interview with The Breakfast Club, the Afrobeats singer shared insights into his journey, touching on everything from the growth of the music genre to his upcoming wedding and the pain of losing his son.
With a new chapter on the horizon, Davido revealed that he and his longtime partner, Chioma Rowland, are planning a white wedding in August, set to hold in Miami. The couple had their traditional wedding in Lagos last year, a grand celebration that blended Yoruba and Igbo traditions with a lot of celebrity sparkle.
That day, Davido added a sweet, personal touch by remixing the viral song Ogechi, dedicating a line to Chioma. It was more than just music. It symbolised their enduring love, made even stronger by everything they’ve faced together.
I’m not cheating again. I don’t want wahala, Davido said, hinting at lessons learned from past mistakes and a renewed commitment to stability. He admitted to having five children with four women but stressed that painful life experiences have taught him to value peace and family more than ever.
One of those life-changing experiences was the tragic death of his son, Ifeanyi, in 2022. Davido described the loss as devastating but said the arrival of his twins last year had brought some light back into his life.
The boy looks exactly like my son, who passed. He shared emotionally. They act the same. Everything he used to do, he does.
As he prepares for his Miami wedding, Davido also wants to shift the narrative in the Afrobeats scene. Speaking on the long-standing conversation around the “Big 3” (himself, Wizkid, and Burna Boy), he said the genre has outgrown that limited focus.
The culture is just so big, and the conversation is bigger than the Big 3 right now, and that’s just the truth, Davido explained.
He shone the light on new voices in the industry, making big waves.
There is Rema, Ayra Starr. There are so many artists for us to make this thing about us. I feel like right now, the three of us understand that it is bigger than us and whatever it takes for the culture to grow, whichever way, we’re all for it.
While he no longer has personal relationships with Wizkid and Burna Boy, Davido didn’t rule out a possible collaboration in the future. Still, he hinted that some people behind the scenes may benefit from the tension among them.
I mean, it is not impossible, but I feel like people around us wouldn’t want that to happen. Some people make money off us not being cool, I guess, but with me, there have been situations where we’ve all been cool.
Through it all, Davido is evolving as an artist, a partner, a father, and a man determined to write a better story.
