There is a power outage in some parts of Kano and Kaduna states after vandals reportedly destroyed two towers belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The TCN’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, in a statement issued on Friday, identified the damaged towers as T133 and T136 towers, located along the 330-kilovolt Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines 1 and 2.

She mentioned that TCN is planning to deploy its newly acquired emergency restoration system to the affected site while reconstruction of the damaged towers is being prepared.

The statement added that the Shiroro regional office reported that the first 330kV transmission line tripped, followed shortly by the second.

Efforts were ongoing to restore the first line when local vigilante groups were mobilised to patrol the area, leading to the discovery of the damaged towers and their severely damaged cables.

“Arrangements are in top gear to deploy the newly procured ’emergency restoration system’ to the site, pending the reconstruction of the damaged towers.

“In the interim, our engineers have implemented a temporary measure to supply bulk power to the Kaduna and Kano regions via the 330kV Kaduna – Jos transmission line.”

Mbah also said that an aerial survey was conducted in collaboration with security agencies due to the region’s vulnerability to banditry, which poses a risk to TCN installations and personnel.
