Côte d’Ivoire confirmed their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a commanding 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Marrakesh on Tuesday night. The defending champions produced a controlled and clinical performance that ensured they topped their last-16 tie and completed the final eight teams in the tournament.
Manchester United winger Amad Diallo was at the centre of the Ivorian display, opening the scoring in the 20th minute with a composed finish after taking advantage of space in the box. Just before half-time, Diallo turned provider, delivering a precise pass that allowed Yan Diomandé to double the lead with a composed strike from close range. The home side had dominated possession and territory throughout the opening period, forcing Burkina Faso to chase the game and creating repeated pressure on the defence.
Burkina Faso showed resilience but struggled to break down the well-organized Ivorian back line. One of their rare openings came when Dango Ouattara’s effort struck the base of the post, but the visitors were unable to capitalise and stayed scoreless. In the closing stages, substitute Bazoumana Touré added a third for Côte d’Ivoire, sealing the victory with a well-taken finish that reflected the Elephants’ control of the contest.
The win sets up a highly anticipated quarter-final match against Egypt in Agadir, where the record seven-time African champions will test their title defence against one of the continent’s most successful nations. The Ivory Coast side will carry confidence into that fixture after a display that combined attacking enterprise with disciplined defence.
The result also completes the quarter-final line-up for the tournament, joining teams such as Egypt, Algeria and others that advanced from the round of 16 earlier in the competition. With Morocco hosting the finals and several heavyweight teams still in contention, the knockout stages are shaping up to be fiercely contested.
For Burkina Faso, the defeat ends their run at AFCON 2025, bringing an end to a campaign that showed glimpses of promise but ultimately fell short against one of the strongest sides in Africa. The Stallions will now return home with lessons from facing the continental defending champions.
Côte d’Ivoire’s progression continues their reputation as a force in African football, blending experienced internationals with rising talents and making a strong case to retain the title they won in the previous edition of the championship.
