A civil society organisation, the Concerned Nigerians Group, has condemned the Department of State Services (DSS) over the “distressing” detention and ridiculous arraignment of Mr Atiku Isah, the factional President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
According to the statement released on Friday, the group said that Mr Isah is being held under deplorable conditions and has been charged with “unlawful possession of firearms”—a charge they describe as “hideous” and “a sick attempt” to damage his reputation and break his spirit.
The group stated that the weapon in question may have been planted on Isah by individuals reportedly hired by the President’s “on, Seyi Tinubu to assault him. “Considering he was almost lifeless by the time they were done with him, it is plausible the firearm was plant”d by thugs hired for the attack,” the group claimed.
The organisations also accused the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, of institutionalising the use of violence and intimidation against activists and dissenting voices.
It said this pattern, employing cultists and thugs to silence critics, has long been associated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but has now escalated under the Tinubu regime.
Furthermore, the group expressed concern over what they described as a history Nigeria’son and abuse by Nigeria’s security agencies. They recalled a previous instance where Isah was reportedly forced to make false confessions under duress to protect the interests of individuals close to the President.
This evil persecution of Mr. Isah has caused his family unimaginable pain and anxiety,” the statement read. “For a government so obsessed with optics and marketing Nigeria, this fixation with tyranny and brute force is shameful and dangerous.”
The Concerned Nigerians Group calls on Nigerians to speak out and demand justice.
We urge all well-meaning Nigerians to demand the immediate and unconditional release of Atiku Isah, the group concluded.
