The 2025 Met Gala is shaping up to be quite the night for style and culture, though, through the eyes of Black menswear. This year’s event, on May 5, will be co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and the always-on-post Anna Wintour. The gala, known for its over-the-top themes and daring moments of fashion, is set to power through an exploration of Black men’s influence on style, making this lineup of co-chairs particularly fitting.
This year’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, pulls from Monica L. Miller’s Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity study on how fashion has shaped Black identities. The forthcoming exhibition will pore over the history and cultural significance of the Black Dandy, from 18th-century Europe to the modern global fashion capitals of London, New York, and Paris. Thus, the show at the Met will illustrate the use of fashion to explore and articulate identity within the Black diaspora through historical and contemporary works that reflect tailoring as a potent means of self-expression, resistance, and transformation.
The official dress code for the evening, Tailored for You, aligns with this vision. It invites every guest to offer a creative interpretation of tailored fashion. Focusing on menswear, guests will most likely wear tuxedos, structured outlines, and fine accessories like hats, brooches, and ties that show personal spins on classic tailoring. This night will celebrate, in name, a modern iteration of Black Dandyism for its storied past and powerful resonance in fashion today.
The honorary chair this year is NBA star LeBron James. The host committee members are a long and impressive list, including André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jordan Casteel, Dapper Dan, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Edward Enninful, Jeremy O. Harris, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Rashid Johnson, Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, Angel Reese, Sha’Carri Richardson, Tyla, Usher, and Kara Walker.
The exhibition at the Costume Institute will be filled with garments, paintings, photographs, and even excerpts of films that showcase how style has been both a tool of resistance and self-definition in Black communities. The show, according to Max Hollein, the director and chief executive of the Met, is a sprawling, profound investigation into the role of fashion in the construction of identity. From its origins to various contemporary interpretations, the showcase traces the concept of Black dandyism, showing how style continues to be a powerful instrument of stereotype-busting and reinvention.
With its thrilling mix of cultural icons, fashion innovators, and historical depth, the 2025 Met Gala will surely be among the most meaningful and visually striking events. The first Monday in May is fast approaching, and anticipation mounts as this red carpet-equaling event readies bold statements and creative takes.
