Cameroon Commits to Stronger Bilateral Ties with Nigeria

Cameroon has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Nigeria, pledging to deepen cooperation in trade, security and regional integration.

The commitment was made on Wednesday during a meeting between Cameroon’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, [Name], and Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, [Name]. Both officials discussed ways to enhance the longstanding relationship between the two neighbouring countries.

According to a statement issued after the meeting, Cameroon expressed its readiness to work closely with Nigeria on issues of mutual interest, including cross-border security, economic development and the fight against terrorism. The two countries share a long border and have faced common challenges, including the Boko Haram insurgency and the activities of armed groups in the Lake Chad Basin.

The Cameroonian envoy also praised Nigeria’s role in promoting stability in the West African sub-region and reiterated Cameroon’s support for closer collaboration within the framework of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and the African Union.

Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister welcomed the commitment and noted that both countries have enjoyed cordial relations for decades. He said Nigeria would continue to work with Cameroon to address shared challenges and explore new opportunities for cooperation.

The meeting is part of ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties. Trade between Nigeria and Cameroon has grown in recent years, although informal cross-border trade remains significant. Both governments have expressed interest in formalising trade routes and improving infrastructure to boost economic activity.

The two sides agreed to hold further consultations on specific areas of cooperation and to work towards signing new bilateral agreements in the coming months.
