Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has announced intentions to generate and distribute electricity locally by the end of 2026. Speaking at a town hall meeting with various stakeholders, Governor Mbah outlined critical initiatives to revitalise the state’s infrastructure and educational sector.

He said, “Electricity is a major infrastructural requirement for industrial development. We are going to set up the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission as we tackle all legal and regulatory issues in actualising the objective.

“Working with the private sector, we shall generate and distribute electricity in Enugu by the end of 2026. We will build transmitter lines and handle the distribution of power.”

Central to his address was the establishment of the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission, slated for imminent inauguration. This regulatory body will reportedly spearhead efforts to navigate legal and regulatory hurdles, facilitating the realisation of the governor’s electrification agenda. Collaborating with private sector partners, the state aims to build transmission infrastructure and oversee power distribution, ensuring reliable electricity access for businesses and households across Enugu.

“People can come here to buy and distribute power. We desire to ensure we have a steady power supply to businesses and households in Enugu,” he stated.

This governor’s statement comes against the backdrop of nationwide electricity challenges and the persistent challenge of erratic power supply in the state. Going by precedents, promises tend to replace proactivity in Nigeria, which lacks key infrastructure nationwide.
