The Burkina Faso government has called on the people to stand united with the Combatant Forces after a brutal terrorist attack by the al-Qaeda-linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) struck the Barsalgho community in the Centre-North region, killing over 200 and injuring at least 140.

Speaking at Kaya Hospital on Sunday, the Minister of State for Communication, Culture, Arts, and Tourism, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, condemned the attack as a cowardly and barbaric act aimed at inflicting maximum civilian casualties. He noted that most of the victims were women, children, and the elderly.

“More than ever, the Burkinabe people, the worthy sons and daughters, must remain united around our defence and security forces to thwart the sinister designs of these hordes of terrorists, orchestrated or manipulated with the sole aim of enslaving us and further weakening our country,” Burkina Faso News Agency quoted him.

Accompanied by the ministers of Security, Mahamadou Sana, and Health, Jean-Claude Kargougou, as well as the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Brigadier General Célestin Simporé, the minister expressed the government’s solidarity with the victims on behalf of President Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

“This is also a message of support and gratitude to the healthcare workers who have been mobilised since the attack’s first moments. We assure you that all the injured will receive the necessary care to save their lives,” Ouédraogo said, voicing his belief that the people of Burkina Faso will overcome these terrorists.
