Communities in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State were thrown into chaos as terrorists affiliated with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a faction of Boko Haram, launched brutal attacks on two villages.

According to reports, the attacks began on Sunday afternoon when insurgents stormed Tsikarkur village around 2 pm, firing indiscriminately and setting houses ablaze. The militants also looted food supplies and livestock before leaving the village in ruins.

The attack continued late Monday night, targeting Zillang, another community in the Chibok area. Gunmen invaded the village around 11:30 pm. Prompt action by villagers, who alerted the Nigerian Army, led to a swift response by soldiers and local vigilantes. A fierce gun battle ensued, lasting from 11 pm to 4 am. Although the number of casualties remains unclear, significant property damage has been reported.

These attacks followed closely on the heels of another tragic incident in Borno State, where 40 farmers were killed in the Dumba community, Kukawa Local Government Area, by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists.

Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attacks and committed to assisting the affected communities.

Many who escaped the attack are still being tracked to be reunited with their families, he said.

Borno State has long been plagued by insurgent violence, with Chibok gaining international attention in April 2014 after Boko Haram abducted over 300 girls from the Government Girls Secondary School in a high-profile incident that sparked global outrage.
