Sony’s latest installment in the Bad Boys franchise, titled “Ride or Die,” has exceeded expectations with a robust opening weekend. Starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the action-packed film raked $104.6 million globally in its opening weekend.

This success is a timely victory for Will Smith, who has been on a path to redemption following the highly publicized incident at the Oscars two years ago. The reunion of Smith and Lawrence on the big screen has reignited audience interest, evident in the film’s positive reception and opening solid weekend score.

In the United States, the movie debuted with $56M. Notably, “Ride or Die” attracted a significant portion of younger viewers. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that 44 per cent of the audience fell between 18 and 34. African American moviegoers also turned out large numbers, comprising 44 per cent of the total audience.

Ride or Die is one of the season’s top domestic releases, trailing only behind “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which debuted with $58 million domestically.

Released on June 7, 2024, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, “Ride or Die” follows the success of its predecessor, “Bad Boys for Life,” which amassed $426 million worldwide before the onset of the pandemic. For Smith, this marks a significant return to the forefront of theatrical releases since the Oscars controversy, with hints of the incident addressed within the film.
