Algeria, Nigeria, and Niger have signed an agreement in Algiers to fast-track the implementation of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), a project aimed at transporting Nigerian gas to Europe.
The TSGP, spanning over 4,000 kilometres, will connect Nigeria’s gas fields to Niger and Algeria, allowing gas exports to Europe via the Transmed pipeline to Italy through Tunisia or by liquefaction for shipment. Once operational, the pipeline is expected to deliver between 20 to 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually to the international market.

Initially launched in 2009 with an estimated construction cost of $10 billion, the project has faced delays, partly due to security concerns in the Sahel region. However, the latest agreement signals renewed commitment from the three countries to advance the pipeline, which is also expected to supply gas to Sahel nations.
Algeria and Niger had previously reaffirmed their support for the project during a visit by Nigerien Minister of Petroleum Sahabi Oumarou, to Algiers on September 29, 2024.
The discussions underscored the pipeline’s strategic importance in enhancing regional energy security and strengthening Africa-Europe energy ties.
