Violent clashes broke out between police and hundreds of residents in Abidjan on Thursday during a demolition and eviction operation. Residents of the Adjamé village, a working-class neighbourhood in central Abidjan, expressed their anger by gathering and throwing stones at the police and gendarmes, who responded with tear gas. At least one construction machine was set on fire by demonstrators.

By midday, dozens of houses had been destroyed, and the streets were filled with debris, with residents searching for their belongings. Siaka Dosso, the deputy director general in charge of public security, stated that there were no reported injuries.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told AFP that the police arrived at 5:00 a.m. and instructed them to remove their belongings from their homes before demolishing them. The resident added that he did not know where he would spend the night.

Adibo Tajou, another resident, described the situation as “a catastrophe” and said they had lost many possessions. Tajou’s neighbour, Rosine Adou, reported that her jewellery, clothes, and other items were stolen during the chaos.

In some areas, businesses were destroyed to make space for the new road. Mr Dosso said, “We must help carry out this work,” mentioning that the people affected were informed about the demolition, although many denied this.

Adjamé is one of many traditional villages in Abidjan where evictions have increased since February, particularly in areas prone to flooding.

Earlier this year, floods caused the deaths of at least 24 people over ten days. In response, a special 300-strong urban disorder force was established in Abidjan on Monday.

Governor Ibrahima Cisse Bacongo stated that President Alassane Ouattara has emphasised the importance of fighting urban disorder, improving sanitation, and accelerating the improvement of living and working conditions for residents.
