Abia Rep Ikwechegh Granted N500,000 Bail Following Assault of Bolt Driver

A Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja has granted N500,000 bail to Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, following his assault on a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya. Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has been the subject of widespread criticism after a viral video captured him slapping and insulting Abuwatseya.

The incident took place on October 27 in Maitama, Abuja. Abuwatseya had requested Ikwechegh to approach his parked car to pick up a parcel, a request Ikwechegh found offensive. In response, he slapped Abuwatseya twice, tore his shirt, and threatened further violence. Speaking over the phone, Ikwechegh said, “I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria, and nothing will happen.”

On Wednesday, Ikwechegh was arraigned on charges of assault and threat to life. He pleaded not guilty, and his counsel requested bail. Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id approved the N500,000 bail with two sureties who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide utility bills as proof of residence.

Following the terrible incident, the House of Representatives called on Nigerians, especially Ikwechegh’s constituents, to report concerns to its spokesperson. Under the Nigerian Constitution, constituents have the right to recall their representatives. The case has been adjourned until November 8 for further proceedings.
