Ghana’s Economy to Hit $128.64 Billion in 2026, Retains Position as Africa’s 8th Largest

21

Ghana’s economy is projected to reach $128.64 billion in 2026, retaining its place among Africa’s ten largest economies, according to the International Monetary Fund.

The latest IMF database places Ghana ahead of Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, whose economies are estimated at $127.15 billion and $122.28 billion respectively. The projection represents an upward revision of $13.93 billion from an earlier estimate of $114.71 billion, an increase of approximately 12.1 per cent.

The figure measures the total value of goods and services produced in the country at current prices, expressed in US dollars. Separately, the IMF projects Ghana’s economy to grow by 5.7 per cent in 2026 after adjusting for price changes. This is higher than the 4.5 per cent growth forecast for sub-Saharan Africa.

South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria are expected to retain their positions as Africa’s three largest economies. Algeria, Morocco, Angola and Kenya are projected to rank ahead of Ghana.

The IMF noted that while Ghana’s projected ranking highlights its economic position on the continent, a larger economy does not necessarily mean households have greater purchasing power or that businesses are creating enough jobs.
