Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji is set to grace the screen once more, ending an eight year acting hiatus with a role in “Wahala,” a new six part thriller produced by BBC Studios. The announcement, made by the BBC on Tuesday, has sent waves of excitement across Nigeria and beyond as fans celebrate the return of one of African cinema’s most influential stars.

Nnaji’s last on screen appearance came in 2018 with “Lionheart,” her directorial debut, which premiered internationally that year before streaming globally on Netflix in January 2019. That film, which she also starred in and directed, made history as Nigeria’s first submission to the Academy Awards. Since then, the veteran actress has maintained a relatively low public profile, fuelling intense anticipation among her devoted fanbase over what she would do next.

Her comeback comes in the form of “Wahala,” a Nigerian Pidgin word meaning “trouble,” a drama that promises to deliver a gripping and surprising narrative. The series is based on Nikki May’s bestselling debut novel of the same name and has been adapted for television by BAFTA nominated screenwriter Theresa Ikoko, known for the critically acclaimed coming of age film “Rocks”. Firebird Pictures, a production company under the BBC Studios umbrella, is producing the series for BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

Nnaji joins a formidable female led ensemble that includes Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo and Susan Wokoma. The six part thriller weaves between two timelines, following four Nigerian British women in their thirties as they navigate careers, love and family in present day London, while also revisiting their childhood homes where danger and unsettling mysteries linger. As buried secrets and painful pasts begin to surface, the women’s lives are threatened, placing their friendships under increasing strain.

At the heart of the story are Simi, Boo and Ronke, played by Adedayo, Jumbo and Wokoma respectively. Their close knit bond is disrupted by the arrival of Isobel, a charismatic and super wealthy new acquaintance portrayed by Ayorinde, whose presence triggers a chain of events with shocking and tragic consequences.

Reacting to her casting, Nnaji expressed pure excitement about joining the production. “I’m very happy to be joining ‘Wahala’ and to be working with such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story and I’m excited to be a part of it,” she said. Her enthusiasm was echoed by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, who praised the source material. “Theresa’s scripts for ‘Wahala’ are an absolute joy, riveting, full of rich and complex characters, and everything you’d want from Nikki May’s exquisite book brought vividly to life on screen,” Salt said. “It’s no surprise that it’s attracted a cast of this magnificent calibre”.

Elizabeth Kilgarriff, Executive Producer at Firebird Pictures, also expressed pride in the team assembled for the production. “We are so proud to be announcing our incredible cast for ‘Wahala’ and can’t wait to see them breathe life into these wonderful characters. ‘Wahala’ promises to be a fantastically entertaining, gripping and epic story that we are delighted to bring to the BBC,” she said.

The production boasts an impressive creative team behind the camera as well. The series is directed by Leonora Lonsdale, Theresa Ikoko and Remi Weekes, with Ado Yoshizaki Cassuto serving as producer. Nawfal Faizullah executive produces for the BBC alongside Kilgarriff, Craig Holleworth for Firebird Pictures, and Ikoko herself. BBC Studios will handle global sales, ensuring the series reaches an international audience.

For Nigerian fans who have long revered Nnaji as a trailblazer, this announcement is a moment of celebration. Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential actresses, her return to acting after such a long absence is seen as a major event for the industry. The project also represents a significant milestone for Nigerian talent on the global stage, placing a beloved homegrown star within a major BBC production alongside acclaimed British actors.

“Wahala” is currently in production, with the series expected to stream on BBC iPlayer and air on BBC One. While an official release date has not yet been announced, anticipation is already building for what promises to be one of the most talked about drama series of the coming season. For Genevieve Nnaji, after eight years away, the screen is finally calling her back, and the trouble, it seems, will be well worth the wait.
