Mali and Burkina Faso Impose Reciprocal Travel Curbs on U.S. Citizens

519

Mali and Burkina Faso have announced reciprocal travel restrictions on citizens of the United States, escalating diplomatic tensions between the Sahel states and Washington.

The decision follows recent changes to U.S. entry policies that affected nationals of several countries, including those in Africa. Authorities in Bamako and Ouagadougou said the measures were taken in line with the principle of reciprocity and in response to what they described as unilateral actions by the United States.

Officials from both countries expressed concern over the lack of consultation before the U.S. decision and stressed that the new restrictions are meant to protect national dignity and sovereign equality. The travel measures take effect immediately and apply to short term visits.

The move adds to already strained relations between the United States and parts of the Sahel, where military led governments have increasingly pushed back against Western influence while redefining their foreign policy priorities.
