DR Congo Stun Nigeria on Penalties to Keep World Cup Dream Alive

The Democratic Republic of Congo delivered one of the biggest surprises of the African World Cup playoffs on Sunday after holding Nigeria to a 1–1 draw before defeating the Super Eagles 4–3 on penalties. The result keeps DR Congo in contention for a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Nigeria struck first through Frank Onyeka, giving the Super Eagles an early advantage. DR Congo responded just before halftime when Meschak Elia found the equaliser. The match remained tense through the second half and extra time, with neither side able to break the deadlock.

The turning point came in the penalty shootout. Timothy Fayulu, brought on specifically for the spot kicks, made two decisive saves for DR Congo. Captain Chancel Mbemba then converted the final penalty, sealing a dramatic victory for his country.
