Burkina Faso Ends School Fee Coverage for Families Of Embassy and Consular Staff Under New Pay Scale

1.4k

The Government of Burkina Faso has adopted a new decree revising the pay scale and benefits for staff assigned to the country’s embassies and consular posts. The decree eliminates the coverage of school fees for dependents, a benefit previously extended to the families of diplomatic staff.

The decision was taken during the Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday, September 4, 2025. Presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabe Abroad, the decree defines the general conditions of assignment and stay and the remuneration and benefits package applicable to diplomatic and consular personnel.

According to Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, the new framework introduces significant changes, notably limiting the coverage of travel documents and insurance strictly to embassy staff.

Officials said the reform seeks to rationalise state spending while ensuring clearer, standardised conditions for Burkinabe representatives abroad. However, removing school fee coverage is expected to generate debate within the diplomatic corps, as many families rely on such support during overseas postings.

The decree will take effect immediately, marking a shift in the benefits structure for Burkina Faso’s diplomatic personnel worldwide.
