The Nigerian Federal Government inaugurated a new passport front office in Abuja on Tuesday, exclusively for senior public officials. At the same time, ordinary Nigerians continue to face long-standing delays and inefficiencies in the passport processing system.
The facility, launched by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is designed to “fast-track” the application process for top-level government personnel, allowing them to bypass the protracted queues and bureaucratic hurdles that everyday citizens routinely endure.
According to the Minister, many senior officials had previously been forced to abandon their official duties to wait in line at regular passport offices.
It became clear that for us to serve the nation more effectively, we must also serve those tasked with its leadership more efficiently,” he said.
However, critics have pointed out that the move prioritises VIP treatment for politicians rather than addressing the root issues in Nigeria’s passport system, such as systemic delays, staff shortages, corruption, and poor infrastructure that affect millions of Nigerians trying to obtain or renew their passports.
So instead of fixing passport delays for everybody, una build VIP express lane for politicians,” a Nigerian posted on X.
While the minister emphasised that the new facility is part of broader reforms within the Ministry of Interior to improve overall service delivery, there has been little detail on when—or if—those reforms will trickle down to benefit the general public.
The new office is managed by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and is part of a larger initiative aimed at improving operational efficiency. Yet, many Nigerians are still waiting for months for travel documents.
