The Burkinabè judiciary has launched an investigation into hate speech circulating on social media calling for the extermination of an ethnic group.

The Prosecutor of Faso at the Ouaga I High Court issued a public statement on March 20, 2025, announcing that several pages engaged in such activities had been identified and that legal action was underway to apprehend those responsible.

Press statement

To ensure a swift and effective investigation, the prosecutor has issued a call for witnesses, urging the public to provide any relevant information that could lead to the perpetrators’ and their accomplices’ identification and arrest.

Authorities have also encouraged citizens to report Facebook or WhatsApp pages or profiles sharing such inflammatory content.

Reports can be made through multiple channels, including submitting a written complaint to the Prosecutor of Faso at the Ouaga I High Court, calling a hotline in the press release, or submitting via the provided website. Citizens are also urged to visit the nearest judicial police service or the prosecutor’s office in person.

The statement concluded by reassuring the public that all reports would remain confidential and anonymous. Authorities are calling for full cooperation from citizens to ensure that those spreading hate speech are brought to justice.
