On Thursday, Burkina Faso President Captain Ibrahim Traoré stated that the country is engaged in a “war of independence” rather than a conventional fight against terrorism.

Speaking in Ziniaré during the inauguration of a cement plant, Traoré said the conflict is driven by “imperialist logic” and urged citizens to commit to achieving national sovereignty.

“I hope everyone has realised that we are no longer in a war against terrorism but a war of independence. We must understand that this war was imposed on us by imperialist logic,” AIB quoted him.

He added that all nations act in their interests, stating that developed nations fight to continue to exploit cheap raw materials to operate their industries, which provide jobs.

“It is, therefore, logical that they want to dominate us and keep us in a permanent state of war in order to prevent us from thinking and developing,” he said.

Traoré called on Burkinabe citizens to actively engage in efforts to secure the country’s independence, saying:

“They are defending their interests in the wrong way, of course, but we must fight to free ourselves and get out of this situation.”
