Nigerian singer-songwriter Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made history as the first African female artist to have a song surpassing 1 billion streams on Spotify. The milestone was achieved with Wait for U, her 2022 collaboration with American rapper Future and global star Drake.

The hit song, which blends Future’s signature trap sound with Tems’ vocals, quickly became a global sensation upon release. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking another historic moment for the Nigerian music industry. Wait for U also won Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 2023 Grammy Awards, solidifying Tems’ status as a force to reckon with in the international music scene.

Tems, known for her distinct voice and soul-stirring lyrics, has pushed African music beyond its borders. Rising to fame with her breakout hit Try Me in 2019, she has since collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including Beyoncé, Wizkid, Rihanna, and Drake.

Her feature on Wizkid’s Essence in 2021 significantly introduced her sound to a broader audience. The song earned her a Grammy nomination.

Tems’ success marks a turning point for African female artists, often underrepresented on global music charts. While Afrobeats has gained massive recognition recently, the industry has been largely male-dominated, with stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido leading the charge.

With this new milestone, Tems is paving the way for more African women to enter the international market.
