Following the announcement of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) of the appointment of former Malian coach Éric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

The new coach will earn $25,000 monthly and arrive in Nigeria today, Saturday, alongside two assistants. Both assistants are expected to earn $5,000 each monthly. The trio will be officially unveiled during a ceremony in Abuja on Monday.

Chelle is expected to immediately take charge of the Super Eagles B team in preparation for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), held from February 1 to 28, 2025, in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

A source within the NFF revealed that Chelle’s contract includes critical targets, including leading the CHAN Eagles to the tournament’s final and ensuring Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the USA, Canada, and Mexico will co-host.

The major issue is the Super Eagles’ qualification for the FIFA World Cup, the source told The Guardian.

The NFF has also clarified to Chelle that he must take the CHAN Eagles to at least the final. To me, these are tough challenges for the new coach, but in football, nothing is impossible.

Recthatelle’s appointment comes after Tinidi George stepped down, leaving the coaching position vacant. This followed a series of underwhelming results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, including a draw against South Africa and a loss to the Benin Republic. TNFF’s effort to bring in another coach led to the announcement of Bruno Labbadia, who turned down the appointment despite his announcement.
