Statistician-General Adeyemi Invited for Questioning by DSS Following Ransom Survey Report

Adeniran Adeyemi, the Statistician-General of the Federation, has been summoned for questioning by the Department of State Services (DSS) following the release of a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on ransom payments in Nigeria.

The report, titled Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey, revealed that between May 2023 and April 2024, Nigerians paid an estimated N2.23 trillion as ransom to kidnappers.

The survey, which was published on Tuesday, also indicated that 65 per cent of households affected by kidnappings resorted to paying ransoms, with an average ransom of N2.67 million per incident.

The findings have sparked widespread debate, drawing attention to the country’s alarming economic toll of insecurity.

However, after the report was released, NBS announced that its website had been hacked. In an announcement via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the NBS confirmed the cyberattack, urging the public to disregard any unofficial communications from the website until the breach is resolved.

The site’s homepage currently displays a “Page Hacked” message, corroborating the security breach.
