Nigeria experienced another national grid collapse on Thursday, marking the second major outage in three days and the eleventh failure in 2024. The collapse occurred around 11:20 a.m., confirmed by a statement from the official Nigerian National Grid page (@NationalGridNg) on X.

The incident led to a complete drop in power generation, as zero megawatts were produced shortly after the failure. This disruption impacted all 22 power generation companies nationwide and cut power to numerous regions.

Electricity distribution companies, including Ikeja Electricity, informed customers on social media about the outage and claimed that supply restoration was ongoing with support from key stakeholders. This latest grid failure has sparked renewed debate and frustration among Nigerians on social platforms.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to release an official statement on Thursday’s incident. Earlier in the week, however, TCN attributed the previous outage to trips in transmission lines and generators. Meanwhile, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Wednesday said he received an investigative report addressing the causes of Nigeria’s frequent grid failures.

Despite previous pledges to improve the electricity sector, the country’s grid collapse challenge has worsened. Within one week in October alone, the grid collapsed three times. The persistent outages continue to impact the lives and businesses of citizens negatively.
