Enugu State Police Use Tear Gas on Nigerians Demanding Justice for Murdered Okezie Mba

Officers of the Enugu State Police Command on Saturday fired teargas on protesters demanding justice and accountability following the murder of Okezie Chikezie Mba, a traditional Ogene musician popularly known as Igbo-Jah.

Before the shooting, several videos and pictures showing the crime scene were posted on X by concerned Nigerias, many of which indicated that the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the NPF in Enugu put eight rounds of ammunition into Mba.

Reportedly, Mba was invited to perform at a burial in Enugu, after which the NPF invited him to perform for them before he was allowed to go.

Nwamba, however, was shot severally from behind by what was reportedly described as “Accidental discharge” while setting up his instruments.

The police officer(s) allegedly dumped Nwamba’s lifeless body at UNTH Enugu and fled the scene.

With the news outbreak, residents and fans of the late musician took to the street and were also shot at—this time, with teargas.

West Africa Weekly called the Public Relations Officer of Enugu Police Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, who did not respond to either outreach.

Subsequently, a press statement was released by the Police Command, admitting the case as murder.

While Enugu Police Command confirmed the reports as murder, it did not reveal the name of the trigger-happy police officer who murdered Mba.

However, Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to conduct a full-scale investigation to facilitate “prompt and appropriate disciplinary actions” against the unnamed police officer.

According to Police Command, Mba’s body has been deposited at an unnamed mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Nonetheless, the latest count of civilian casualties showcases a continuous case of unprofessionalism by officers of the NPF across Nigeria.
