Pan-African Activist Kémi Séba Announces His Candidacy for Benin’s 2026 Elections

A Beninois pan-Africanist politician, Kémi Séba, has been arrested in Paris. According to Afrique Confidentielle, which exclusively reported his arrest, Seba was detained on Monday afternoon in a restaurant with his associate Cyrille Kamden in Paris.

His arrest is reportedly linked to his use of a Nigerien diplomatic passport to enter France. However, no official statements have confirmed the reasons for his detention.

Seba, the founder of the NGO Urgences Panafricanistes, is known for his anti-colonial stance and activism against Western influence in Africa, particularly through his campaign against the CFA franc.

In 2018, Seba set fire to CFA franc banknotes in Senegal to protest the use of the French colonial currency. He burnt his French passport shortly after he was stripped of his French nationality for “acting against the interest of France.”

Seba has been arrested multiple times for his outspoken criticism of France and the Western colonial legacy in West Africa.
