Court halves bail for 5 #EndBadGovernance protesters from N10m to N5m each

A Federal High Court in Abuja has reduced the bail amount for five of the 10 #EndBadGovernance protesters previously charged N10 million each to N5 million.

The protesters were arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite on September 2 for treason and served the bail conditions on September 11.

These include a total payment of N100 million (N10 million each), a surety with an affidavit and landed properties at the Federal Capital, Abuja, submission of International passports and recent photograph passports to the court’s register as requirements for their release.

With the conditions set, Marshall Abubakar, counsel for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th defendants, appealed the stringent bail conditions.
The new conditions, granted by Justice Nwite, required that the new sureties must have a close blood relative, such as a parent or another relative residing within the jurisdiction, in case the parents are unavailable.
The protesters were charged on a six-count charge for active participation in a nationwide peaceful protest in August, on the applicant’s (Nigeria Police Force) allegations of treason, conspiracy to commit felony, inciting mutiny, and attempting to destabilise the country under Section 97 of the Penal Code.
All charges were pleaded “not guilty” by the defendants.
