Authorities of Niger and Burkina Faso have banned a French TV show for being judged to stigmatise African women and being inconsistent with the values of the countries.

In a statement by the Superior Council of Communication of Niger, French broadcaster Canal was ordered to “no longer broadcast or rebroadcast” season three of the series ‘The Bachelor’.

According to the statement, the show is “stigmatising nature for African women, non-protective of youth, and contrary to the values and to the customs of the country,”

Authorities in Burkina Faso say the content of the show is corruptive and inconsistent with the values of the country.

Various French TV stations and shows have been banned in recent times by members of the Alliance of Sahel States – Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.

Last month the trio ordered an investigation of Wassim Nasr, a journalist with the French channel, France24, over his suspected links with terrorists in the Sahel region.

Earlier, Mali suspended a French-language channel, TV5 Monde for three months for reporting a terrorist attack without including the Malian army’s version of events in its reportage.

The three West African countries have severed ties with France and its allies including the United States, Ukraine, and Sweden, for supporting and funding terrorist groups in the Sahel region.

They also withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which they accused of being a puppet to the West.

The trio have turned to Russia for support in their counterterrorism efforts.
