Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, has raised its monthly subscription fees in Nigeria by 97 per cent, from N38,000 to N75,000. The new rates took effect immediately for new customers and will be implemented for existing customers starting October 31, 2024.

The company also increased the price of its hardware kits by 34 per cent, from N440,000 to N590,000. Starlink communicated these changes to its Nigerian customers via an email on October 1, 2024. The company attributed the price adjustments to excessive levels of inflation.

According to the email, the Standard (Residential) plan now costs N75,000 monthly, while the Mobile – Regional (Roam Unlimited) plan has risen to N167,000. The Mobile – Global (Global Roam) plan saw the highest increase, now priced at N717,000 per month.

The price changes have been updated on Starlink’s website, but the company provided no additional explanation beyond inflation concerns. The increase comes amid steady decline in Nigeria’s currency, which has dropped from N907 to N1,601 per dollar in the official market since early 2024, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria.
