DJ Cuppy Becomes First British-Nigerian To Host UNGA Opening Session, Launches Fund For African Students

Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy and daughter of Nigeria billionaire Femi Otedola, made history by becoming the first British-Nigerian to host the opening session at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), bringing youthful energy and a global voice to the prestigious event.

Cuppy, a philanthropist and renowned DJ, anchored the “Youth Actions Day” at UNGA’s “Summit of the Future” over the weekend. As a key figure in the proceedings, she emphasised the need for youth involvement in global leadership, highlighting her passion for education through her Cuppy Foundation, which funds African students.

During her opening remarks, Cuppy delivered an impeccable speech introducing herself with pride, representing Nigeria, and encouraging the audience to engage in discussions around youth leadership and education.

My name is Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, but you can call me Cuppy. I’m repping a country called Nigeria, in case you’ve heard of it. I’m a DJ, philanthropist, but also your moderator.

But it feels like I’m more your co-host, because today is all about you. It’s all about you. Now, someone once told me, it’s not about your ‘what’, but it’s about your ‘why’. So why are we here? We believe that youth need to be able to take action. We believe in leadership that brings everyone to the table. And that’s why I’m just so proud to be here.

Her speech resonated with the audience, mainly focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 4, which advocates for quality education for all. She closed the session with a musical performance that left a strong impression.

In addition to her role at UNGA, DJ Cuppy launched the “Cuppy Fund” at New York University (NYU) on September 19 to support African students studying abroad. The singer, who has an impressive academic background with four degrees from King’s College London, New York University, University of Oxford, and London School of Economics, expressed her excitement at the opportunity to give back to African students.

Her journey from music to philanthropy has included founding Red Velvet Music Group, a London-based music management and content production company and now, DJ Cuppy continues to use her platform to empower the next generation.
