As Nigeria Air Project Fails, Uganda Airlines Launches Direct Flights to Abuja

Uganda Airlines has officially commenced direct flights between Entebbe International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The inaugural flight landed in Abuja on Thursday, September 12, 2024, and was received by Nigerian government officials led by Dr. Hassan Ejibunu, Director of Air Transport, representing the Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo and other dignitaries.

The launch of the Entebbe-Abuja route is set to promote stronger economic, commercial, political, and social ties between the two countries.

Uganda Airlines will operate two weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays, reducing travel time to approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, a significant improvement over previous indirect routes that could take up to 14 hours.

In conjunction with the flight inauguration, Uganda Airlines and the Uganda High Commission hosted the 4th Nigeria-Uganda Trade & Business Forum on Friday, September 13, 2024.

The event brought together stakeholders from both nations to explore mutual trade and business opportunities.

Nelson Ocheger, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, highlighted the benefits of the new direct flight, noting that it would ease travel, lower costs, and facilitate trade between East and West Africa.

“This direct flight will not only reduce transport costs but also increase trade, benefit businesses, and create employment opportunities in both Uganda and Nigeria,” Ocheger said.

With the addition of Abuja, Uganda Airlines now serves 16 destinations, including Lagos, which was launched in October 2023.
