Sweden to Offer Immigrants $34,000 to Return Home

80

Sweden has announced it will increase grants to $34,000 for immigrants who will return to their home countries. Starting in 2026, those who voluntarily leave Sweden will be eligible for up to 350,000 Swedish kronor, a major increase from the current cap of 40,000 kronor per family.

Migration Minister Johan Forssell described this move as a significant shift in Sweden’s migration policy. The aim is to encourage more immigrants to choose repatriation.

Ludvig Aspling from the Sweden Democrats noted that the current grant has been underused due to its small size and lack of awareness. He expects the new amount will attract more migrants to want to return to their home countries.

“The grant has been around since 1984, but it is relatively unknown. It is small and relatively few people use it”, he stated.

This policy change comes despite a recent government inquiry that advised against increasing the grant. The inquiry stated that the costs might outweigh the benefits. The recent decision, however, is part of the right-wing government’s efforts to control immigration.
