10 Killed In Recent Farmers-Herders Clash In Oyo – NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said at least 10 people died during the recent clash that occurred between some farmers and herders in the Saki West Local Government Area of Oyo State.

NEMA noted that the incident occurred at the Gbenpakan community in Saki West LGA in August 2024.

This was disclosed by the agency’s Southwest Zonal Coordinator, Mr Kadiri Olanrewaju, on Wednesday after he led a delegation to the community on Tuesday.

Olanrewaju, who stopped at the residence of the LGA Chairman, Gbenga Akinola, noted that three other people sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

“It was reported that the conflict stemmed from tensions regarding agricultural land use, with farmers accusing herders of encroaching on their farmland for grazing purposes.

“The clash resulted in the tragic loss of 10 lives, while three individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.”

Last week, West Africa Weekly reported the resurgence of herders attacks on farmers in the Southwest region, with most of the attacks recorded in Oyo, Ondo and Osun.

A similar scale of attack around 2019/2020 triggered threats of secession by self-appointed agitators for the Yoruba Nation for the region.
