Court Orders Kuje Prison To Provide Wheelchair For Detained Binance Executive

74

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered Kuje correctional facility officials to provide a wheelchair for Tigran Gambaryan. Gambaryan is one of the two top Binance executives detained in Nigeria in February over money laundering and tax evasion charges.

Justice Emeka Nwite, on Monday, gave the order after Gambaryan approached the judge to express frustration over his declining health since being held at Kuje prison. He lamented that while he has managed a herniated disc for 12 years, his condition has worsened due to the lack of proper treatment at the facility.

Despite his legal team’s earlier request for a wheelchair, prison officials had not provided one. Justice Nwite questioned the prison officials over this and ordered that a wheelchair be provided. The order was carried out immediately, and Gambaryan was later wheeled out of the courtroom.

The trial was delayed, however, due to the absence of the Central Bank of Nigeria officials, who were supposed to present documents related to the case. The trial was adjourned to September 4, 2024.
