Heavy rains in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, since Friday have caused significant damage, according to the National Agency for Management of Emergencies and Humanitarian Disasters (L’ANGUCH).

The agency reported there would be “a lot of material damage” resulting from the flooding and confirmed that two people were missing. The agency’s director, Lance Touré, said a preliminary report on the situation will be released Saturday evening.

The National Meteorological Agency (ANM) issued a weather alert for Lower and Middle Guinea due to heavy rains and thunderstorms that began Friday and are expected to continue until Saturday evening.

The meteorological agency urged residents to exercise caution and prepare for high flood risks, limit unimportant travels, and stay informed of the latest weather updates through the agency’s Facebook page.

Guinea has recently been experiencing intense rainfall, especially in the coastal regions. Heavy rain on the night of July 29 to 30 caused flooding and serious damage in 14 neighbourhoods of Siguiri — northeast of Guinea — and four nearby areas.
