Sudan Army Boycotts US-Led Peace Talks in Switzerland

The Sudanese army has boycotted United States-led peace talks aimed at ending Sudan’s civil war. The discussions kicked off in Switzerland on Wednesday without the participation of the military,  led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

The 16-month conflict resulted from clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The war has had devastating consequences, causing tens of thousands of deaths and displacing millions.

While the RSF is participating in the talks, General al-Burhan has insisted that military operations continue until the RSF withdraws from civilian areas. The absence of the army from the negotiations lengthens the possibility of reaching a peaceful resolution.

The talks, held behind closed doors, are being attended by representatives from the United Nations, the African Union, Egypt, and other international bodies.
