A former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou, has died at the age of 77. He passed away Thursday.

Hayatou served as CAF’s president from 1988 to 2017. On the global stage, he held influential positions within FIFA, where he was a member of the executive committee (now the FIFA Council) from 1990 until 2017. He briefly served as FIFA’s acting president from 2015 to 2016 following Sepp Blatter’s suspension.

Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Friday extended his condolences to the family of Hayatou and the people of Cameroon.

“The President describes the passing of the legendary football administrator as a huge loss, underlining his contributions to the development of the sport in Africa and beyond,” said the statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President, Chief Ajuri Ngelale.

Also, FIFA President Gianni Infantino paid tribute to Hayatou and expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family via an Instagram post.

He wrote, “Saddened to hear of the passing of former Caf president, former Fifa president ad interim, Fifa vice president and Fifa council member, Issa Hayatou.

“A passionate sports fan, he dedicated his life to sports administration.

“On behalf of Fifa, condolences go to his family, friends, former colleagues and all who knew him. Rest in peace.”
