Nigerian Poly Expels 27 Students For Protesting Against Unlawful EFCC Arrests

The Federal Polytechnic, Ede in Osun State, has reportedly expelled 27 students and suspended 10 others for participating in a protest against unlawful arrests by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

This has triggered a protest by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which is calling for the sack of the Rector of the Polytechnic by the Federal Government.

Speaking with Pressmen on Wednesday, the Southwest Zonal Coordinator of NANS, Alao John, argued that the school’s decision is undemocratic. “The students were not given a fair hearing,” he said.

John explained that the students went to the EFCC Zonal office in Ibadan to protest in solidarity with their unlawfully arrested colleagues. But by the time they got back to school, “the school management had taken the decision” to suspend and expel them.

He vowed that NANS would shut down the school if the Rector is not sacked by Friday.

We are saying no to the expulsion. We have given a five-day ultimatum to the federal government for the removal of the Rector. If he is not removed by Friday, we are shutting down the school on Monday.

The EFCC is fond of unlawful, indiscriminate arrests of young people, especially students of tertiary institutions, and parading them as fraudsters. Various protests against such indiscriminate arrests have not yielded any change.
