Musician Haruna Aliyu Tortured And Illegally Detained By Nigerian Police For #EndBadGovernance Protests

789

Musician Haruna Aliyu has been illegally detained and tortured by the Nigerian police in Bauchi State for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests, according to Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 African Action Congress Presidential candidate of Nigeria. Sowore revealed the incident through a tweet on his verified X page, highlighting that the Inspector General of Police must go and that Aliyu be freed.

The protests, which demand an end to bad governance, a reduction in food inflation, and removal of subsidy, have gained momentum, with demonstrators also calling for the removal of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun. The treatment of protesters by the police has been widely condemned by many who blame police high-handedness for escalating the protests into violence.

Social media is awash with evidence of police misconduct, including instances of officers opening fire on civilians and using tear gas to disperse crowds in Abuja, Kaduna and other states. These actions underscore the apparent disregard for human lives by the Nigerian police force in some states.

Despite the mounting evidence, Police Chief Kayode Egbetokun recently denied any wrongdoing by police operatives, claiming the police were civil to protesters. This claim echoes the federal government’s previous claims that no lives were lost during the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria on October 20, 2020.
