Several Senegalese migrants have gone missing in Mauritanian waters, according to migration researcher and Horizons sans Frontières’ President, Boubacar Sèye.

In a press release published by Sèye, the missing migrants, seeking to reach Europe, left Nouakchott port in a small boat and have not been heard from since.

“It is an appeal to the Senegalese and Mauritanian authorities, issued under a cry of despair that we received this morning at Horizon sans Frontières,” the press release said.

“There are more than 140 people, all candidates for illegal emigration, to embark in a pirogue from the port of Nouakchott bound for Europe. The vast majority are of Senegalese nationality.

“Since that date, no news of the boat and its occupants.”

Families of the missing have travelled to Nouakchott, Mauritania’s capital, for help, but their efforts have been unsuccessful, according to Sèye.

He added that there is information suggesting the migrants might be held in Ouadane, a city 618 km far from Nouakchott.
