Kenya’s Inspector General of Police, Japheth Koome has resigned. His resignation is not unconnected to earlier reports about nine bodies – allegedly of protesters – retrieved from a quarry near a dumpsite opposite the Kware Police Station, in Nairobi.

Local residents assisted by Kware Police found the bodies, some of which were dismembered while others had been stuffed in sacks.

Many citizens believe these are related to the earlier police crackdown on protesters.

According to President William Ruto, who announced the police chief’s resignation, he has now assigned Deputy Inspector General Douglas Kanja as the acting police chief.

Koome’s tenure as Inspector General began in September of 2022. Criticism of him skyrocketed after the police response to the Gen Z protests calling for various government reforms.

These protests were severely cracked down on, with several injuries and fatalities. It was reported that more than 40 people had lost their lives, mostly due to police gunfire.

The President has ordered radical changes to the police command structure at the top following the events.

Noor Gabow was transferred from the position of Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Administration Police.

Eliud Lagat, the current Commandant General Service Unit, is the acting Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Kenya Police, while James Kamau is now in charge as acting Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Administration Police.

Ranson Lolmodooni takes the seat of the new General Service Unit Commandant. William Yiampoy takes over as the head of operations from being the current Presidential Escort Commander at Police Headquarters.

Kainga Mathiu assumes the position of Commandant of the National Police Leadership Academy.
